How to Find Keywords People Are Actually Using
There are a lot of great websites out there that can provide you with exact metrics to help you decide whether or not you should try to rank on a specific keyword or not. Today we’re not going to be running through these. Instead, we’re going to share with you a really simple hack to finding out what others are actually search for using nothing but Google.
This will help those of you who don’t have much digital marketing knowledge but are looking to set up your On-Page SEO and Google Ads without hiring a professional.
Okay so, all you need to do is…
Head on over to Google.com, and begin typing in the search bar what it is that you do
To help make this process as easy as possible (because tech things can feel overwhelming sometimes), we’re going to create an alternate reality where you are a photographer based in Chelmsford. Ready to embrace this new reality? YAY! Now, let’s get to what you would type into the search bar to begin…
Yup, you guessed it. You’d start with the phrase “photographer”. It’s important that you don’t press enter… It’s not the search results that we need.
What we need appears as you type in the Google Search bar.
It’s a list of recommendations that Google automatically lists directly below the search bar. See it? It’ll look like this:
What Google is sharing with you is a list of ‘similar searches’ that others have actually searched for. And whilst this data is amazing, and dare we say it: actually free! We don’t recommend using such a broad search in your marketing copy because to be honest, you have no chance of appearing, and if you do, you’ll be paying a lot in advertising fees.
Instead, we’ll be extending the search to:
“photographer chelmsford”.
With this in the search bar, Google suggests keywords like “photography chelmsford”, “wedding photographer chelmsford” and “professional photographer chelmsford”.
To bring up even more suggestions, you’ll want to utilise an asterisk (*)
This is how we’d use an asterisk in this scenario:
“* photographer * chelmsford *”
Google will fill in the missing words with what people actually search for.
You can then save all of the data that you find within this super quick search and start adding them to your target keywords in Google Ads, or in your website metadata.
Easy, right?
